NHS Summer Resources

Posted Date: 6/20/25 (9:52 PM)

Hello Hornet Families,

Congratulations on making it to the end of this academic school year.  We hope you are already enjoying the joys of summer whether that means sleeping in, traveling, spending more time with loved ones, or diving into your passion projects.

We know that busy high school students sometimes spend more time at school than with family during the school year.  Summer down time allows for more time to hang out and let conversations meander from reflections to plans for the future.  We hope this email serves as a resource in case your conversations bring up school topics.  We will send another more detailed communication before school starts.

Take care this summer!  We look forward to seeing you in the community and when school resumes in August!

Warmly, Michelle Cortez, Allie Greene, and Jahon Miles

NHS  Bell Schedule Changes

At NHS, we believe our most important resources are people and TIME.

This spring Hornet staff spent time adjusting our schedule to focus on using time productively.  We moved ACCESS to the end of the day on Wednesdays and tracked data on tardies, hall passes, and bathroom use.

Based on these conversations, we’ve revised our 25/26 Bell Schedule with the following changes:

  • Passing periods increase from 5 minutes to 10 minutes

  • Integrate brunch into passing period (and eliminate 15 minute break)

  • Keep ACCESS Wednesday at the end of the day with all teachers in their room to support students who opt in for help

  • These changes slightly impact dismissal by up to 15 minutes - and students who take the bus have less wait time.

We know coordinating high school schedules can be a complex task and want our community to have this information as you make plans for the fall.

What to Expect Next Year

Focus on Engagement: As we look ahead to the coming school year, our academic focus will be on engagement—deepening our students’ connection to their learning, their peers, and their goals. Research and our own experience show that when students are truly engaged, achievement follows. Together, we will cultivate classrooms where curiosity and creativity thrive, participation is expected, and every student feels seen, challenged, and inspired.

Brightening the Lines:  We have changed and we want to make sure that everyone is aware of the changes.

  • Dress Code (Upcoming) - A committee of parents, students and staff have worked on a draft policy for student dress code. This will likely be passed at the end of June and will go into effect in August.

  • Academic Honesty

  • Cell Phones - The district is working on a policy that will be more consistent with the
“Phone Free School Act (AB3216)." We look forward to further eliminating distractions with phone usage during class times and thank you in advance for your support.

  • 10/10/10 Rule - The bookends of class are the most important times and we want to reduce tardies and interruptions to the beginning and end of class. As students will now have a ten minute break between periods, we are instituting the 10/10 rule. Students will not be allowed to leave class, barring emergencies, for the first or last ten minutes of class.
