Update on Measure G

Posted Date: 06/16/26 (03:21 PM)

Dear NUSD Staff and Community,

We are writing to provide an important update on Measure G, the local parcel tax measure dedicated to maintaining critical services, core academic programs, and staffing levels for our students. This measure, if passed, would bring in $4 million ongoing for eight years.

As you know, Measure G requires a two-thirds (66.67%) affirmative vote to pass. The election results remain too close to call, and we are currently awaiting the final votes to be counted by the Marin County Elections Department. Each voting update has inched us closer to that necessary milestone, however, we are not clear on an exact timeline when all votes will be counted.

While we remain somewhat hopeful for a positive outcome—as passing Measure G is the ideal scenario for the future of our schools—the Board of Trustees and District Leadership must also plan responsibly for all financial contingencies.

What Happens Next?

  • If Measure G Passes: We will be able to secure locally controlled funding to help protect student programs and maintain the quality of education our community expects and deserves.

  • If Measure G Does Not Pass: The District and the Board of Trustees will be obligated to identify significant budget reductions for the 2027–2028 school year. Given our projected revenues and expenditures, these reductions would need to total at least $6 million.

Impact on Collective Bargaining & Salary Discussions

We are currently in negotiations with our labor unions who have presented proposals to improve staff salaries and benefits. Unfortunately, until we have a definitive assessment of our revenue stream from the final election results, any salary discussions at the negotiating table will need to be temporarily delayed. Understandably, one union team is frustrated by this delay, but waiting for final election results is critical to a productive discussion. Please know that we are committed to transparency throughout this process and will share the final election outcomes and next steps just as soon as the election results are certified.

Thank you for your continued dedication to the students of Novato Unified School District.

Sincerely,

Dr. Tracy Smith, Superintendent
